This morning, I had the wonderful privilege of taking my son out on a date. I get to spend a lot of one on one time with the girls... Grace, because I am often driving her off to activities and Ariana, because, well- because she's "the baby." I always ask Alex to come with me by himself when I go run errands or grocery shop- but for some reason, that just doesn't have quite the appeal for him. Not nearly as much- that is- as a date to the donut shop!

So- this morning we headed over to Mr. Donut - the very same store that many years ago I was taken to for dates when I was his age. And, let me tell ya, nothing about that place has changed. Same booths, same 70's counter tops, same garbage/tray stand that was there 25 years ago (ewww). The place could use a bit of updating, for sure, but I cherished being there with him.
We ordered up our donuts... chocolate with sprinkles for him, chocolate glaze for me. A special hot chocolate for him, a plain decaf coffee for me (that I had to choke down- gross!). We sat down in our booth- facing each other- and visited away about things that 4 year old's love to talk about. He confirmed for me, again, that his favorite thing to play with is "Cars" and that when he grows up he wants to be either Spiderman or a Dad. He wondered about when Spring would "come back" and suggested that maybe it was already over! We talked about everything. And nothing. And I loved every second of it.
I honestly didn't want our time to end! As he finished the last of his donut and started to get up from the booth to go- I said, "We don't have to go yet! There's no hurry." And for me, Ms. Multi-tasker, Type-A, always doing 5 things at once.... that was quite the proof that I wanted to be nowhere other than right where I was.... sitting in a 1970's orange booth, sipping weak coffee- but across from my handsome boy who lights up my life.

That's so sweet!!
I'm glad to see he's feeling better & you two were able to get out of the house for a while!!
Very sweet! It's so nice you take the time to go on special dates with your little guy!
Are you kidding? Mr. Donut is still on 1st St.? It's near where Hardee's and Happy Chef were, right? Vintage decor and all?! If they had good coffee and dimmed the lights, the decor might be considered retro cool (as long as it doesn't smell bad) ;)
Peace, little Mama!
And cheers to your family's better health!
So sweet Angela! We still go to Mr Donuts too...nothing has changed! Very funny and cool at the same time. I glad you guys got to enjoy your date! Talking about cars is very important stuff ya know!
Glad to hear everyone if finally feeling better!
SO sweet. You're one lucky lady!
So cute, Ange. Yes! Mr. Donut (now called "Donut Connection" - ha ha! At least they updated their signage, lol!)! I used to take Taylor there for dates before her nut allergy. I kinda like their coffee?
Ryan is JUST like Alex: insignifican errands just do not appeal to him either. So I guess special dates with our little "middle boys" are mandatory now.
Glad you're all on the mend over there! Let's get together soon!!!!
I love this post, Angela! I too, remember donut dates with my dad...in my hometown we had an old shop...I think he took me there the day I got my braces off, and we would always stop in after midnight on the way home from "away" basketball games--by that time of night/morning they had fresh blueberry cake donuts ready! Mmmmm!
Yes...MckMama and I met half-way between her neck of the woods and my old stomping grounds (was back to see family and friends for a short bit), south and east of you. I've become bloggy friends with so many folks in the metro area--I need to make pilgrimages back more often to meet all of you!
